Do the Write Thing Mixer: Where Community and Creativity Meet
USC Annenberg’s Hollywood, Health & Society made a splash with their recent mixer kickoff event titled Do the Write Thing, where creatives and community came together to celebrate voices that don’t get heard enough in Hollywood, specifically people of color and Indigenous groups.
The gathering, held May 10 at the Aster hotel and social club in Hollywood, featured conversation, catching up among friends, and some good old-fashioned networking among the guests.
Featured speakers during an informal panel were:
- Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single, A Different World, Black-ish, Dear White People, Unprisoned)
- Joy Gorman Wettels (Unprisoned, Eyes on the Prize: Hallowed Ground, 13 Reasons Why, Home Before Dark)
- Carla Banks Waddles (Bel-Air; That’s So Raven, Half & Half, Hit the Floor, Good Girls, One Love), founder of Babycakes Productions Inc.
- Lane Lyle, a writer who recently earned her first credit on Onyx’s Unprisoned and apprenticed showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser on Dear White People and Run the World.
Two other gatherings are scheduled for early August and in early October.
